Dr Francesca Tallia
Scientific Advisory Board Member and Academic Co-Founder
Leading Imperial biomaterials scientist and Co-Founder whose research underpins Bounce Biomedical’s Bouncy Bioglass™ platform.
Dr Francesca Tallia is a leading biomaterials scientist, she specialises in bioactive glasses, inorganic-organic hybrid materials and regenerative medicine, with particular expertise in the development of advanced biomaterials for cartilage and bone repair and regeneration.
Francesca is an Academic Fellow in Biomaterials and former MedTechONE Translational Fellow at Imperial College London, where she leads research focused on the design, manufacture and biological evaluation of next-generation regenerative biomaterials for soft tissue orthopaedics. She completed her PhD within Professor Julian Jones’ internationally renowned biomaterials group at Imperial and has since established an independent research programme spanning bioactive materials, additive manufacturing and translational regenerative medicine. She has received numerous prizes and awards for her research on Bouncy Bioglass™ and additive manufacturing for tissue regeneration, including ESTROT Silver Award 2024, ACerS Bioceramics Division Young Scholar Award 2021, Julia Polak EU Doctorate Award 2019, Italy Made Me Prize 2018, Constance Fligg Tipper Centenary Memorial Prize 2017 for the best PhD in the Department of Materials at Imperial. She also gave a TedX talk on the evolution from Bioglass to Bouncy Bioglass for tissue regeneration as part of the “Tradition meets Innovation” theme.
Her research integrates materials synthesis, scaffold design, advanced manufacturing, mechanical and biological performance evaluation, providing expertise across the complete development pathway for regenerative biomaterials. She has extensive experience in bioactive glass synthesis, inorganic-organic hybrid materials, direct ink writing (DIW) and digital light processing (DLP) additive manufacturing, scaffold characterisation and preclinical biological assessment, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals. She has also secured competitive research funding from EPSRC, NIHR and Wellcome Trust in recognition of the quality and impact of her work.
Francesca has played a central role in the development of the bioactive glass and hybrid biomaterial technologies. She is the leading inventor of Bouncy Bioglass™ and Co-Founder of the ChondroBounce™ technology. As a member of the Scientific Advisory Board, Francesca provides strategic guidance on biomaterials innovation, translational research and product development.
