Dr Xinyu Li
Senior Development Scientist
Biomaterials scientist specialising in hybrid materials and advanced manufacturing for cartilage regeneration, and recipient of the prestigious Larry Hench Prize for excellence in Biomaterials research.
Dr Xinyu Li is Senior Development Scientist at Bounce Biomedical, where she leads research and development activities focused on the company’s Bouncy Bioglass™ platform and its application to next-generation regenerative medicine products. Her expertise spans hybrid biomaterials, electrospinning, 3D printing and materials characterisation, with a particular focus on cartilage and osteochondral regeneration.
Xinyu received her PhD in Biomaterials from Imperial College London, where she worked in Professor Julian Jones’ group on advanced hybrid biomaterials for cartilage regeneration. Her doctoral research combined inorganic–organic hybrid materials with electrospinning and 3D printing, including the development of electrospinning process for Bouncy Bioglass™ formulations and integrating electrospun hybrid membranes with 3D-printed scaffolds. Her work also involved extensive characterisation of material and device performance, including tribology, mechanical and degradation testing, FTIR, XRD, AFM, confocal microscopy and micro-CT.
Following her PhD, Xinyu worked as a Research Associate at Imperial College London on a multidisciplinary osteochondral regeneration programme, contributing to hybrid material preparation, Direct Ink Writing, manufacturing optimisation and materials testing while working with biological, animal and surgical collaborators. She also supported postgraduate supervision, technical training and biomaterials laboratory management.
Xinyu has presented her research at major international conferences including the World Biomaterials Congress, the European Society for Biomaterials Annual Conference and the International Sol–Gel Conference. Her work has received several awards, including the Best Student Oral Presentation Award at the China- Europe Symposium on Biomaterials in Regenerative Medicine and the Larry Hench Biomaterials Prize, recognising excellence in biomaterials research during her PhD.
At Bounce Biomedical, Xinyu applies her expertise in biomaterials processing, advanced manufacturing and characterisation to the manufacture and preclinical development of Bouncy Bioglass™ implants, helping translate materials research into scalable regenerative medicine products to support future clinical translation.
